THE GREAT CENTRAL ROAD

YOUR STAY IN WARBURTON

This page is for travellers on the Great Central Road section of the Outback way, an inspiring and beautiful journey for all who undertake it. This road will bring you to many interesting places along the way and very importantly to Warburton Ranges itself, the home and showcase of the internationally acclaimed Warburton Collection at the Tjulyuru Exhibition Space. Here you will find information about accommodation, gallery opening hours and contact details for staff at the Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku, Warburton Roadhouse and the Warburton Arts Project. There are also contact details for information and advice on the Great Central Road itself.

The Great Central Road

The Great Central Road extends for 560 kilometers to Laverton, SW of Warburton and roughly the same distance to
Yulara/ Uluru in the North East; there are roadhouses at Tjukayirla and Warakurna approximately midway on these stretches.

Only well appointed and mechanically reliable vehicles should make the journey as the cost of vehicle recovery in the event of breakdown can be expensive - in the unfortunate event of this happening a contact point for vehicle recovery from Warburton to Yulara is provided, below.

Careful driving techniques are also advised: the Great Central Road is unsealed but generally well maintained given its remoteness and the distances involved . But long driving times mean bigger fatigue zones for drivers; combined with higher speeds this becomes a consideration for your trip. A generous allowance of food and water should always be carried.

Throughout the Ngaanyatjarra Lands low aromatic unleaded opal fuel is supplied in place of unleaded petrol. Opal fuel is premium unleaded fuel.
