Opening - Inner Mongolian National Art Museum

Written by Gary Proctor, Director ( 2013-09-13 07:50:00 )

The opening ceremony at Huhehaote (Hohhot) in Inner Mongolia was as memorable as our installation. Everywhere we have gone in China we have been made to feel welcome, but some places stand out as being something more, as having some extra energy at the level of relationships that accumulates over time and makes firm friends. At the banquet after the shows opening, half way through the night, I was struck by the sense that these were new friends I should always want to keep.

Distinguished guests included Mr. Bai, Deputy Mayor of Huhehaote, Mr. Wang and Mr. Ma, senior Minister and Director of Cultural Affairs Bureau. Mr. Michael Growder, cultural counsellor from the Australian Embassy in Beijing very kindly made the trip across to do the honours for us. Ms. Robin Bordie, General Manager China Research and Analysis for Rio Tinto in China, welcomed guests and underlined her company's commitment to community and the arts. Other guests in the Rio Tinto party included Mr. Trevor Gray and Mr. Ivan Vella of Oyu Tolgoi LLC.

This time we had Mark Coles-Smith across from Australia as our Assistant curator, working mainly with our A/V installations. A lot of Mark's work has been in the area of music production and as an actor in feature films and TV, and we hope working with the exhibition concepts has extended his expertise in production design. It was great to have hime with us and we hope he can come again.
