Tu Di Shen Ti - Our Land, Our Body starts second China tour

Written by Gary Proctor, Director ( 2013-06-03 08:30:00 )

Tu Di Shen Ti - Our Land, Our Body opened at the Guancheng Art Museum in Dong Guan on the 4th June. This museum are our institutional partners for the 2013-2014 tour and they have worked hard with us to create the best possible beginning for this, making poster and banner art for the forthcoming shows and for our schools education program. Director Xie Jun and her staff made us feel very welcome as friends from afar and most importantly they worked hard themselves to understand the content and the meaning of the exhibition. This is the second time we have shown at this museum; they liked the exhibition so much we were invited back. Through their efforts and connections we have a great deal of goodwill with the museums we will be travelling to: we are very grateful for all their support.

The exhibition was opened by Australia's Ambassador to China, Frances Adamson from our Beijing Embassy. Our diplomatic missions in China have also been great supporters, and I was particularly happy to welcome Consul General Jill Collins from Australian Consulate in Guangzhou. Jill was present at my first meeting at the Beijing Embassy in 2009, when the tour was in early stages of planning. Also present were Mr. Ian Bauert and Mr. Daniel Cochrane, representing our major sponsor, Rio Tinto. We thank them for their generous support.

The opening was attended by over 500 people and featured a dance pageant from the Dong Guan English Experimental School and a classical string quartet. This was all arranged by the museum in advance, and all delightful.

The people who travelled longest and furthest were Mr. Preston Thomas Deputy Chairman Ngaanyatjarra Council/ Councillor Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku, and Mrs. Beverly Thomas, Deputy Shire President Shire of Ngaanyatjarraku. It was so good to have them with us.
